Hiking Through the Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge, located in the heart of the White Mountains, is one of Europe’s longest and most famous hiking trails. Stretching 16 kilometers, this stunning natural wonder offers a mix of rugged cliffs, lush greenery, and dramatic landscapes.

Starting from the Omalos Plateau, the trail descends through the gorge, passing by the iconic “Iron Gates,” where the cliffs are just 4 meters apart. Along the way, hikers may encounter kri-kri, Crete’s wild goats, and other unique wildlife.

The hike concludes in Agia Roumeli, a picturesque village by the Libyan Sea. From there, visitors can take a boat to nearby towns like Sfakia or Paleochora.

The Samaria Gorge is more than just a hike — it’s an unforgettable journey through one of Crete’s most breathtaking natural landscapes.
